Term 2 - Back at the bench
Week 1 - Wedding Bands
And just like that I am back at the bench learning new skills and it came with a struggle.
This weeks project is to make a wedding band from 9ct D-shaped Gold wire and a wishbone ring from D-shaped Sterling Silver wire. I made a couple of wishbone rings last year, one out of copper wire and the other silver. I had forgotten how hard they are to manipulate the metal to shape the ‘v’.
A wishbone ring can be used to shape around an engagement ring.
As for the wedding band, that was a challenge to say the least. My poor fingers.
Gold is really hard to bend and shape. 9ct gold is harder than 18ct and 24ct. It also has a higher melting point and annealing point than silver so I had to learn to read the different metal so as to not melt the band when soldering it together but also the annealing point so it was more malleable to be able to shape it.
Anyway I managed to finish both the bands including polishing them both in the one day so that is a great result.
That frees me up on friday to start to make my valentines collection now that my silver clay has arrived and also to plan further collections for later in the year.
Bring on next weeks project xxx
